MythBusters: Side-Mirror Folly

The Automotive MythBusters: We may be small, but the misconceptions that we tackle are not diminutive by any means.

This edition's myth affects so many people on a daily basis. It's one of the most prevalent mistakes we find drivers making the world over. It's time to get the facts straight.

MYTH: By adjusting your cars side mirrors so that the sides of the vehicle are in view, you can establish a frame-of-reference for safer driving and enhanced awareness.

FACT: It is safer to adjust the mirrors so that you cannot see any part of the car. The infamous 'blind spots' in a cars rear peripheral are actually located further outside the side mirrors perspective.

The following pictures will better illustrate this concept.

Here you can see there is a car directly in the blind spot. Notice that you cannot see any part of the car which the mirror belongs to. If the mirror were pointed any further inward, the adjacent vehicle would be out of view.
